Chapter Nine

At five to nine the following morning, I was walking through the main gate of Trinity College Dublin and across the beautiful courtyard; still my favourite part of Dublin. Shortly after nine o’clock, I was standing outside the chemistry department waiting for Jennifer Manifold, a research chemist and a very good friend.

I hadn’t seen her for about six months, and perhaps that was why I almost didn’t recognise her. She now had a ring through her eyebrow and purple hair. What a change from the ‘Irish country girl’ I’d met in a pub two years before.

“Daniel! What the hell are you doing here?”

“I have a favour to ask.”

“Sure, come on in.”

I went in.

Forty-five minutes later, Jennifer and I were standing next to the computer printer as the results of her test came through. I looked at the printout, but it didn’t mean a thing to me.

“Wow!” exclaimed Jennifer. “Did you drink any of this stuff?”

“No. Why? Is it dangerous stuff?” I didn’t want anyone, even a good friend like Jennifer, to know my motives.

“Definitely. It would be illegal to sell this stuff in Ireland.”

“Why is that exactly?”

“It has a higher alcohol content than anything I’ve ever drunk.”

No mention of poisons or added drugs. “And that’s it? No other chemicals or additives?”

“Oh, you mean drugs or poisons or something like that?”

Jennifer was brighter than I thought. “Yes, something like that.”

“Sorry to disappoint you, Daniel. A few natural flavourings, but nothing deadly.”

Damn. Back to the drawing board. I already had a million ideas written on my drawing board, and just when I thought I had the answer, I was wrong. “Thanks a lot, Jennifer. I owe you one.”

“I won’t forget that,” said Jennifer with a smile on her face.

Back outside, I wasn’t sure which way to turn. Should I try to contact Eloisa? Ghada had pointed a very long and accusing finger at her. Had Ghada been completely honest with me? What about my ex-boss, Ronan Doyle? Did he know more than he wanted to tell me? He’d been very keen to get rid of me. Was it really just the reputation of his school he was worried about? Then there was the beautiful Jana Schwabová and her thug. Was she really only interested in the insurance money from her husband? The verdict was natural causes, so why did she come all the way to Ireland… with a man with a gun?

I was lucky I had an excellent memory. I remembered that Eloisa was staying at Abbey House, a large hostel next to the River Liffey. I grabbed my coat and mobile phone and set off for a crucial meeting with Eloisa.

As I walked through the backstreets of Temple Bar towards Abbey House, I had a million things going through my mind. One person kept coming back to me: Susan. She wasn’t on my list of suspects, but I couldn’t get her out of my mind. Was it simply because she was a very attractive woman? We’d had a wonderful dance together at the Christmas disco.
